Applying Movie Lines to Real Life

"Let it go, let it go.  This water lives in Mombasa anyway," said a defeated Karen Blixen (played by Meryl Streep) in the movie Out of Africa.  Blixen was trying to control nature by shoring up a dam to preserve the pond she had created.

Lately, I've fallen into the old habit of trying to be in control. I expect people to react in specific ways and when they don't, I get aggravated. A good friend of mine likes to say that expectations are simply future resentments.

I'm in a situation where someone is playing power games and I realized I don't need to play her games. I can simply "let it go" and walk away.

"That's the key to having it all. Stop expecting it to look like what you thought it would look like," explained Enid (played by Candice Bergen) to Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) in a Sex and the City episode.

I am trying to embrace life and be at peace with ALL that it offers.

"People think chutzpah is in the genes. It isn't...it's in the needing and wanting and being willing to fall on your face. It isn't fun...who wants all that rejection, but life is sweeter if you make yourself do uncomfortable things." ~Helen Gurley Brown, editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine for 32 years.
